GA4 Audiences — How to Build Remarketing Lists for Google Ads

Contents

Audiences in GA4 aren't just segments for analysis — they're ready-made lists you can export straight to Google Ads as remarketing. A well-built audience can cut CPA by dozens of percent; a poorly built one wastes budget on people who were never going to buy anyway.

How an Audience Differs from a Segment

A segment (in Explore) is an analysis tool — you compare groups within a report, nothing gets "saved" for later. An audience is a defined group of users that GA4 keeps updating continuously, and you can:

  • Share it to Google Ads as a remarketing list
  • Use it as a condition in another report
  • Track it as a separate dimension over time

Building an Audience Step by Step

Admin → Audiences → New audience.

You have two options: a template (Google suggests ready-made ones, e.g. "Purchasers", "Cart abandoners") or building from scratch with conditions.

Example — 7-day cart abandoners:

Include condition: event "add_to_cart" occurred
Exclude condition: event "purchase" occurred within 7 days of add_to_cart
Membership duration: 30 days

Membership duration is the key parameter — how long a user stays on the list before automatically dropping off (if they don't meet the condition again). For fashion e-commerce: 30 days is a sensible starting point, customers typically return within that window.

Three Audiences Worth Having Right Away

1. Cart abandoners (7-30 days) — add_to_cart without purchase. The foundation of retargeting, usually the highest ROAS.

2. High-intent non-purchasers — users with 3+ view_item events in a single session, no purchase. They browsed a lot but didn't buy — a hesitation signal, a good target for dynamic remarketing with a discount.

3. Past purchasers, category-specific — customers who bought in category X but haven't returned in 60+ days. Cross-sell/upsell instead of pure prospecting.

Exporting to Google Ads

Admin → Product links → Google Ads. Once the property is linked to an Ads account, audiences automatically show up in Google Ads → Audience manager as a "GA4" segment — ready to use in remarketing campaigns and Performance Max.

Important: GA4 requires a minimum list size (usually around 100 active users for Display/Search, more for some formats) for the audience to be usable in a campaign — smaller lists are simply rejected or not targeted by Google.

Common Mistakes

Overly narrow conditions — an audience with 5 AND conditions rarely reaches a usable size. Start simple, refine later.

Too short a membership duration — a 1-day cart-abandoners list won't realistically fill up before the campaign refreshes it.

Missing exclusions — if you don't exclude purchasers from the "cart abandoners" list, you're showing ads to people who already bought — wasted budget and a bad user experience.

TL;DR

  • Audience ≠ Segment — an audience is saved and exportable to Google Ads, a segment is analysis-only
  • Membership duration determines how long a user stays on the list
  • Start with: cart abandoners, high-intent non-purchasers, category-specific past purchasers
  • Link the property to Google Ads under Admin → Product links so audiences reach Audience manager
  • Overly narrow conditions and missing purchaser exclusions are the most common mistakes when building lists
